Iced Coffee
with a Little Spice...



Iced coffee is a tasty alternative to hot coffee, especially on a hot summer day and when you add a touch of spice it turns into something very special.

Do plan ahead as this drink must be chilled prior to serving.

Your Iced Coffee Ingredients



Iced Coffee

  • 4 1/2 cups freshly brewed coffee

  • 6 Tablespoons sugar

  • 3 Tablespoons Dutch-process cocoa powder

  • 2 cinnamon sticks (not powdered cinnamon)

  • 6 cloves, whole

  • 4 strips orange zest, each about 3 inches long by 1 inch wide

  • Ice for serving

  • 1/2 and 1/2 for serving


Brew coffee to the desired strength.

Using a heatproof pitcher or bowl (I used a Dutch oven), combine the brewed coffee, sugar, and Dutch-processed cocoa powder.

Stir as long as it takes for the sugar and cocoa to dissolve completely.

Add the cinnamon sticks and cloves.

Twist each piece of orange zest and add to the hot liquid mixture. Twisting the orange peel pieces releases the oils inside, which will infuse the coffee with flavor.

The coffee should stand at room temperature for 60 minutes so the flavors can meld nicely. If you think of it, stir it a few times during that hour.

After the coffee has been standing for an hour, pour the mixture through a sieve in order to remove the cinnamon sticks, cloves, and orange zest.

Cover the container and refrigerate for 2 hours.

Stir the coffee mixture before pouring.

Fill chilled glasses with ice and then fill the glass 3/4 of the way with the coffee mixture. Add 1/2 and 1/2 to fill the glass to the top.
